Relationship counselling
Relate counselling is open to everyone. Whether you are married, living together, in a same-sex relationship, separated, divorced or single, our confidential service can help you deal with your relationship difficulties. You can come on your own or with a partner.
Everyone experiences difficulties now and then – it’s how you cope with these which make the difference. Relate counsellors understand that it may be very hard for you to admit that you and your partner cannot resolve your differences on your own. Your counsellor will listen to both of you and will not take sides. Your counsellor will not tell you what to do but will work with you to help you understand each others needs and make some changes that will be relevant to you.
Some of the issues which clients need help are:
Communication and conflict
Step families
Affairs
Coping with major life changes
Health or money worries
Sexual relationships
Balancing work and home
What is the first step?
Relate will ask you to come for a consultation with a counsellor. This session is to talk about your difficulties and to explore what help would be appropriate for you. The counsellor will explain what counselling involves and answer any questions you might have. If at the end of the consultation it is agreed that Relate counselling may be helpful we will ask you for details of your availability and will contact you when an appointment becomes available. Counselling sessions are usually once a week and last approximately one hour. You will see the same counsellor each week.
Confidentiality
We aim to provide a caring and effective service in a safe environment. We are particularly mindful of the need for confidentiality, and will always take note of any instruction you may have about how we are to contact you. We will not reveal confidential information about you to a third party unless someone’s personal safety is at risk.
What will counselling cost?
£45 per hour is the standard payment. This covers the cost of providing a Relate trained counsellor and does not make a profit. For East Staffordshire residents who find it difficult to contribute this amount payment will be negotiated according to your income and circumstances. Young peoples counselling, some family counselling and particular areas of East Staffordshire are funded and therefore free. Please ask for details.
